Measles remains an active global concern, with the clearest current official signal coming from the Americas. On 2026-10-09, PAHO said the regional risk of further spread remains very high ahead of large religious mass gatherings, reporting 55,792 confirmed cases and 77 deaths in 17 countries and territories between 2026-01-04 and 2026-10-03. PAHO said Guatemala, Mexico, the United States, Peru and Canada account for 99.5% of confirmed cases, and that vaccination coverage in 2025 remained below the 95% target needed to prevent outbreaks. ECDC also kept measles on its active threats list in its week 41 report. Media coverage in the last week has been more U.S.-centred than the official regional picture, focusing on Pennsylvania, New York emergency measures, and descriptions of the worst U.S. measles year in decades. Some of those reports do not line up cleanly with each other: Pennsylvania death totals vary across reports, and one Bangladesh article claimed 900 deaths, far above the 166 measles-related deaths in WHO’s 2026 Bangladesh outbreak notice. The main countermeasures are familiar but unevenly applied: two-dose measles vaccination, catch-up campaigns, surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory support and rapid response. What would change the picture quickly is wider exportation linked to mass gatherings, spread into new under-vaccinated communities outside the Americas, or evidence that surveillance and reporting are missing a larger burden than official figures show.

The global picture is driven by a highly contagious respiratory virus moving through immunity gaps, with especially strong current evidence from the Americas. Vaccines work and are widely available, but uneven uptake, travel and inconsistent public reporting in some countries keep the resurgence risk elevated.

Situation as of 14 Oct 2026

Official

PAHO said on 2026-10-09 that the risk of measles spread across the Americas remains very high because of ongoing outbreaks, vaccination gaps and increased travel tied to upcoming religious mass gatherings. It reported 55,792 confirmed cases and 77 deaths in 17 countries and territories between 2026-01-04 and 2026-10-03, with Guatemala, Mexico, the United States, Peru and Canada making up 99.5% of confirmed cases. PAHO urged stronger vaccination, surveillance and rapid response. ECDC’s week 41 communicable disease threats report also listed measles among active public health threats under surveillance. WHO’s recent outbreak notices continue to frame immunity gaps, importations and uneven surveillance as the main drivers of resurgence.

Media, unverified

Press coverage in the last week has focused heavily on the United States, especially Pennsylvania and New York. Reports described the worst U.S. measles year in decades, Pennsylvania case counts above 1,000, and emergency measures in New York. Some outlets also connected current outbreaks to broader vaccine hesitancy and post-COVID immunisation gaps. A Bangladesh article presented the outbreak as having claimed 900 lives, far above the latest WHO Bangladesh outbreak notice reviewed here.

Control measures

Current measures include catch-up and reactive measles vaccination, pre-travel vaccination advice for people attending mass gatherings, strengthened case finding and surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory support, genomic monitoring, outbreak response teams, risk communication and routine immunisation catch-up. WHO outbreak notices from Bangladesh and Morocco also describe national or targeted vaccination campaigns and strengthened case management.
