Measles in Bangladesh

Pathogen: measles · Region: Bangladesh · Status: closed · Tier: low · Updated

WHO documentation confirms that Bangladesh had a large, nationwide measles outbreak in early 2026, not a small local cluster. In its 2026-04-23 Disease Outbreak News item, WHO said Bangladesh notified it on 2026-04-04 of sustained domestic transmission affecting 58 of 64 districts across all eight divisions. For 2026-03-15 to 2026-04-14, WHO reported 19,161 suspected cases, 166 measles-related deaths, and either 2,897 or 2,973 laboratory-confirmed cases depending on which part of the same WHO item is used. The majority of cases were in children under 5 years, and Dhaka carried the largest burden. Response measures included a measles-rubella vaccination campaign, rapid response teams, surveillance strengthening, vitamin A supplementation, and hospital preparedness. The current monitoring trigger appears to come from media framing in October 2026 that Bangladesh is facing an unusually severe outbreak with wider warning value. In this session, however, no retrievable media articles were successfully returned, so newer media figures and phrases such as "world's worst" could not be verified. The main gap is recency: the latest official source found here is from April 2026. What to watch now is whether Bangladesh has released newer national totals, whether transmission continued after the April campaign, whether cross-border exportations were detected, and whether the April data inconsistency on confirmed-case totals has been clarified.

The main drivers are measles' very efficient respiratory spread and the official description of wide geographic distribution across Bangladesh. Risk is moderated by the availability of vaccination and established response measures, but uncertainty remains because the newest official source retrieved is several months old and current media framing could not be independently verified here. Tier capped at low: the event is historical.

Official

WHO's 2026-04-23 Disease Outbreak News says Bangladesh notified WHO on 2026-04-04 of a nationwide increase in measles driven by sustained domestic transmission. WHO reported spread across all eight divisions and 58 of 64 districts. For 2026-03-15 to 2026-04-14, the WHO summary gives 19,161 suspected cases, 2,897 laboratory-confirmed cases, and 166 measles-related deaths; the body text gives the same suspected cases and deaths but 2,973 laboratory-confirmed cases, plus 30 confirmed measles-related deaths. Most reported cases were in children under 5 years, and the highest burden was in Dhaka.

Media, unverified

This outbreak record was opened because current coverage reportedly describes Bangladesh's measles situation as unusually severe and of possible international warning value. In this session, no media articles were successfully retrieved, so no independent media case count or death toll could be verified.

Control measures

Bangladesh approved a nationwide measles-rubella vaccination campaign on 2026-03-30. A targeted campaign began on 2026-04-05 in 30 upazilas of 18 priority districts, and a nationwide campaign began on 2026-04-20. WHO also describes activated district rapid response teams, fast-tracked vaccine procurement, strengthened routine immunization, hospital preparedness, vitamin A supplementation for suspected and confirmed cases, stronger isolation and infection-prevention measures, and expanded surveillance, training, and weekly situation reports.
